On 10 April 2004, Arduino opened its service to the public, with a free distribution of components and open sourcing the software for a low fee of E£ 10. It was the first service on the web to offer ready-made objects. The first official project published was a remote controlled boat, and this was followed by a music player, a webcam, an infrared gazebo, and eventually an Arduino-based label printer. Arduino's popularity has grown steadily since then, and by April 2009 the company's website was receiving over 700,000 unique visitors a month. In recent years, there have been additional Arduino-based boards including a paper airplane, more robotics projects, home automation, an ATM machine, a robotic mousetrap door, a wall clock, and a robotic self-folding umbrella.
The Arduino provides a general-purpose hardware and software platform for creating interactive objects and environments via a web browser or other means. At its core is a powerful processor, memory, and an open source software library, which can be programmed to control a wide range of devices such as relays, read/write memory, joysticks, steppers, ultrasonic distance sensors, lights, temperature and humidity sensors, fire sensors, water sensors, optical sensors, and more.
The Arduino family of boards is quite large: more than 100 different boards are available in the form of modules (daughterboards) that can be stacked, backwards, to create enormous structures with hundreds of Arduino boards. It is a very inexpensive and useful development platform that allows users to create hardware and software "Arduino clones" that can share the same open source (licensed under the GPL license) software libraries.This is a programming language based on C and heavily influenced by Java.
