The book I’m reading now is called Fingersmith, and I wish someone would have told me, somewhere along the line, that the title is a deliberate and very funny misnomer. I don’t mean funny in the sense of merely odd, though it is that too, like the kinds of things people might say about a table, a pair of shoes, when talking about someone they know. Fingersmith makes use of a kind of silly amuse-bouche: you find, in the course of events, that the title is no more misleading than the book itself. This is a novel about the ruses of bastardy and the self-fashioning a respectable woman can achieve through the artful application of the tools of her trade—such as riches, or, as in this case, an exceptionally delicate and feminine hand. It’s about the perverting of nature and the deep harm that’s done to those who think they’re safe, who believe themselves to be above fear or its earthly consequences. Because of that, of course, I’m getting married, so I’m feeling a bit cautious about reading the last third of the book, which deals with the breakdown of the characters’ marriage. I’m not sure if the advice would be to tackle that kind of scene head-on, the head falling off, the faces painted like a particularly awful birthday cake, or to just leave it for when I’m feeling braver.
