The June 2012 Mid-Atlantic and Midwest derecho was one of the deadliest and most destructive fast-moving severe thunderstorm complexes in North American history. The progressive derecho tracked across a large section of the Midwestern United States and across the central Appalachians into the mid-Atlantic states on the afternoon and evening of June 29, 2012, and into the early morning of June 30, 2012. It resulted in a total of 22 deaths, millions of power outages across the entire affected region, and a damage total of US$2.9 billion which exceeded that of all other derecho events aside from the August 2020 Midwest derecho (estimated US$11 billion). The storm prompted the issuance of four separate severe thunderstorm watches by the Storm Prediction Center. A second storm in the late afternoon caused another watch to be issued across Iowa and Illinois.

Unfortunately, a wet regime did not emerge in May and an unusually dry, warm and sunny period impacted the state for much of the month. Some locations in northeast, central and east central Missouri went 24 consecutive days (May 8-31) with less than 0.10 inches of rain. Some of the lowest monthly totals were in southeastern Missouri where Perryville and Poplar Bluff reported 0.40" and 0.30", respectively. Only a handful of counties reported more than 5 inches for the month, which is near average for May.

Varying periods of warm and cool weather, and the lack of any widespread killing freeze for most of October, allowed additional vegetative growth and green-up of lawns and pastures across the state. Topsoil moisture conditions improved across southwestern, south central and northeastern sections where above normal rainfall totals of 4-6 inches were common. Below normal October rainfall occurred over northwestern, west central and a few southeastern counties, where less than 2-inches were reported for the month. Long-term severe and extreme drought conditions were still impacting northwestern, central and far southeastern Missouri toward the end of October, where year-to-date deficits were 8-12 inches. Significant surface water recovery was especially notable over southwestern sections where more than 10 inches of rain fell between September-October.

New capital for investment in CRE globally dropped 9.4 percent YoY to $298.0 billion,45 attributed to the economic slowdown. The United States continues to be the preferred investment destination, with 43.0 percent of capital46 likely to funnel into the region. Interest in US CRE is validated by a recent Association of Foreign Investors in Real Estate survey, wherein about 60.0 percent of respondents identified the US as offering the best potential for capital appreciation. Further, over the past decade, cross-border investment in US real estate was approximately 7.8 percent of total US transactions annually, while other investments were made through REITs and co-mingled funds.47 Canada, Australia, Germany, the United Kingdom, and Switzerland have been the largest cross-border investors cumulatively since 2001.48Despite economic concerns, the global investor interest in US CRE continues to support the recovery in CRE transaction activity and pricing. In addition, modifications to loosen the Foreign Investment in Real Properties Tax Act regulations will likely attract more capital to the US CRE market.

With several exceptions, few new major privatizations have been conducted since the rush of 2004. The largest recent privatization of Ukrtelekom (Ukraine's monopoly state telecommunications operator), was conducted through what was widely viewed as a non-transparent, single-bid process in 2011. In 2012, most regional gas distribution companies were privatized and the State Property Fund launched the privatization of heating plants with the sale of a heating plant in Kharkiv, in eastern Ukraine. Both privatizations were conducted at what analysts considered below market prices. The 2013 privatization plan yielded only 8% of its projected revenues, despite the sale of Donbasenergo, a regional energy generation company. The government of Ukraine also announced it may privatize the state energy monopoly Naftogaz and its subsidiaries, as well as spirit distilleries, but the initiative has not moved forward. 2b1af7f3a8
