NEW DELHI: The Union Cabinet has approved the 1,000 MW Sarang Dam Project near Delhi, which will be developed by the National Thermal Power Corporation (NTPC) at a cost of Rs 31,864 crore and will be completed by March 2022. The project has been proposed at Sarang, 15 km south of Delhi, which is at a distance of around 50 km from the national capital. The project will have three stages of construction and it will start with an investment of Rs 4,380 crore, which will see the completion of the first stage within a span of four years. The third and final stage will require a total investment of Rs 12,445 crore. The project will have two units and a total capacity of 1,000 MW. The capacity of each unit is 300 MW. The project will start with a power generation capacity of 600 MW in the first stage. The hydroelectricity project, which will have a storage capacity of 3,500 million cubic metres, will also have an annual production capacity of 5 billion cubic metres of fresh water per annum. Another salient feature of the project is that it will be the first large thermal power project to be located in Haryana. With the passage of the Cabinet approval, the project now stands approved.
